Regardless, the girls are doing great! They are both running and climbing and getting into everything they shouldn't. They absolutely love each other and have so much fun playing together. The other day the four of us went to the grocery store and Sadie and I went in a minute or two ahead of Zoe because she had fallen asleep in the car. As soon as the girls saw each other in the store, they screamed, giggled and ran to each other as if it had been weeks (not minutes) since they were last together.

While they are doing wonderfully developmentally, we have yet to be able to get Zoe off of her feeding tube and are considering moving to a lower elevation and participating a rapid wean program. She eats tiny amounts of food every day, most consistently yogurt and ice cream, but we have not gotten her to progress too much beyond that on the solid food front. She puts food in her mouth every day, but when she tries to swallow it, she gags and coughs and spits it back up. If anyone has any experience with tube weaning, please feel free to chime in.

Happy holidays everyone!

The girls are doing great! Zoe is just about off oxygen (knock on wood) except for when she's sleeping, and she is FINALLY walking! She is so proud of herself and we are quite proud of her too! Sadie has SO much energy, it is no surprise to us that she busted out of her water bag and 27.5 weeks! She goes a mile a minute, and she is incredibly strong. But she is also as sweet as can be, and she absolutely loves her little sister, who she affectionately calls, "Ba!" She is quite the little comedian and actor, she has a really rich vocbulary (opposite, kangaroo, and hippo, just to name a few) and whenever she sees bare feet in books, she loves to say tickle tickle tickle and scratch the page.

Zoe is a little more mellow. She loves, loves, loves, to give mommy, daddy, and her nanny super strong hugs. She loves to be cuddled and snuggled and she seriously wouldn't hurt a flea. She very sensitive and spends lots of time observing. Her vocabulary is pretty extensive too. While she says most things her sister says, she is a little behind in the articulation department, but the way she loves to say "good girl," OMG, few things are cuter.

We are as crazy as ever running around after them, but loving every second of it--especially given the fact that things are so much better than they were this time last year (thanks to Zoe's feeding tube). And minus that tube and Zoe's lingering feeding issues, we really are starting to feel like we just have two normal, adorable, amazing little babies. Lucky, lucky us!

<img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_NsKnftqPfY/TgVVfqX5uWI/AAAAAAAAAZY/6BOOCnRTotU/s320/2011-06-10_16-23-42_147.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5621993712280779106" style="cursor: pointer;

Everyone is doing great! The girls are both mobile--Zoe is finally crawling and Sadie is running everywhere. They both say hi, bye, dog, ball, mom, dad, all done and a small host of other one syllable words, and they sign much more than they talk. For example, they sign please, thank you, sorry, they kiss good bye, they sign eat, more, outside, basically, they sign about half of the signs they watch on baby signing time.

We did find out some mildly disturbing news for Zoe. While her pulmonary hypertension has resolved (yay!) and her heart is in great shape, her right lung only has two lobes, as opposed to three, so her left lung is over compensating. We've got to keep a close eye on this and make sure she doesn't get sick because it's really important for her lungs not to have any more stress. We also have to make sure we keep an eye on her back b/c she could potentially develop scoliosis from having a larger left lung. So . . . we're really trying to keep her germ free as much as possible (thank G-d for our awesome nanny) and keep her healthy.

Zoe also does eat by mouth yet. She is just petrified that food is going to make her vomit (because of her severe reflux) so she won't swallow any solid food. She has, however started tasting a lot more foods and she loves to drink water from her sippy cup, so that's a huge plus for us.

Sadie, on the other hand, loves to eat everything, so we often find Zoe sneaking Sadie whatever is on her highchair :). Saide is also very verbal and full of emotion. She knows what she wants and what she doesn't want and she loves to tell you about it. All in all, we feel very, very lucky every day.

Just recently we took the girls to Vegas for a lacrosse tournament and they were over the moon! They loved the hotel, the warm weather and all the attention. There are a few shots above, and here is a video of our little peanuts, who were absolutely CRAZY about their sleeping arrangements in the hotel!

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v11.nonxt2.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D38480e2ecb47617f%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331051844%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D6AE35D6473E7ED94FF48E715946664425D84FFBB.83C11B9D2A04604E930E6D52D845AB07A587C606%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D38480e2ecb47617f%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DomyIjCBrzrbFSF7nK3uTdZmStQ4&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

year's end

As we come upon the new year, we are in awe of how much we have to be grateful for. Things were so incredibly different this time last year, and not a day goes by that we fail to remember just how lucky we are.

A little baby named Ava was recently born with a diaphragmatic hernia, just like Zoe. She fought so hard for 47 days, but her body was not able to adjust. I have thought of her parents every single day since Ava passed away, and I have had a very difficult time wrapping my brain around the fact that so many babies born with diaphragmatic hernias die. It absolutely sucks. There is no explanation for why some babies make it and some babies don't and while we are so lucky Zoe survived, it makes me sick to think of how many little ones don't. So, to you Ava. May you smile upon your parents every single day of their lives.

On a lighter note, which I, of course feel guilty about, our little ones are really coming along. It is so fun to watch them play together, laugh with each other, hold hands and give kisses. Of course they have their moments too--usually when Sadie has decided to push Zoe over or yank on her oxygen tube. But all in all, they are doing amazingly well.

BTW, Zoe needs oxygen intermittently. She has grown SO fast since getting her feeding tube, that her lungs have a little trouble keeping up. Some days she needs it all day, some days she doesn't, but the doctors really don't seem worried at all.

Sadie is 21 lbs, and Zoe is just shy of 19. They both say mama and dada and Sadie says dog, all done, papa, and she loves to sign. Zoe says ball and uh oh (they both love that one) and she is an amazing observer. She doesn't like to say new words until she knows she can get them just right, and you can really see her brain working before she says something new.

They love to play in the snow

and both of them will stop whatever they are doing to watch baby signing time!

Sadie is standing all by herself and she is going to walk any second. While Zoe likes to stand too, she still needs a little support and she is not yet crawling. Even with a nissen, our little one manages to throw up--often--so she has up until now hated being on her tummy. But since she's gotten over 18 pounds, she's really started tolerating her tummy time. We used to think she was going to be one of those kids who skips crawling b/c she LOVES to stand, but we've since changed our minds and I think her crawling is right around the corner.

Zoe still doesn't like to eat by mouth very much, but she had progressed a lot, and lets me get the spoon in her mostly closed mouth every feeding. She takes small amounts of yogurt and pureed foods and we are working her up to solids. Her sister on the other hand, eats everything, and we couldn't be happier that we have at least one baby who is very easy to feed.

THis was our first holiday season with everyone home from the hospital and we are so very, very grateful.

Happy holidays.

Birthday Girls!

The girls turned one on Sunday. It is so hard to believe that they are already one year old!

We spent the weeks leading up to their birthday taking lots of walks and reminiscing--thinking back to when my water broke, when we were relegated to the hospital, and when we really didn't know if the girls were going to live . . . or not. It was hard to think back to that time, physically and emotionally, but we are so grateful to have that behind us.

We are also so grateful, every single day, to have our little munchkins with us, happy and, for the most part, amazingly healthy. We are acutely aware of just how lucky we are, and also acutely aware of the fact that so many parents have had to suffer a different outcome, either from prematurity or a diaphragmatic hernia or both. We really, really wish we could change that.

On a lighter note, here's a little rundown of the girls' actual birthday: They woke up in the a.m. to a few nicely wrapped presents:

Zoe found this whole idea very exciting:

Then we all went to the zoo, where the elephants, tigers and giraffes were all a very big hit!

Then we went home and had cupcakes:

Well, actually, Sadie had a cupcake, Zoe just played with hers. She's developed quite the oral aversion since her last surgery, so we are working very hard to get her to take food by mouth. As anyone who is a parent of a child with an oral aversion knows, this is a very long, difficult process, that just takes time. That being said, Zoe is doing better and better every day, and we are so proud of her.

After cupcakes we took another walk, then read the girls stories and put them to bed. It was, in the end, the most perfect day ever!

Happy Birthday Sadie and Zoe!

Love,

Mommy and Daddy

We made it through surgery, a brief stint in the ICU, and a few days in recovery. Baby Zoe is doing much, much better, keeping food down, taking in tons more fluid and . . . breathing on her own! That's right, the doctors took her off oxygen as soon as she recovered from surgery. And our little girl took right to all the changes. We'd say, from the looks of things, her appetite started to increase immediately.

She's home now, adjusting to her new tummy situation and learning to love food for the first time.

And it appears that her sister could not be happier to have her little buddy back by her side.

Wow. . . it's been a while since we've had a second to breathe, yet alone post, but there may some relief in sight. After months and months of trying everything under the sun to get Zoe to gain weight, we have finally resorted to surgery. Two days ago she had a nissen fundoplication (which is supposed to fix her reflux) and a feeding tube was surgically inserted into her tummy. While the last few days have been rough and the next few weeks are likely to be more of the same, we are hoping that our lives can start to take on some sort of a normal pattern in the near future. For the past nine months we have counted every mililiter that has gone into Zoe's body, we have created a chemistry lab in our kitchen trying to get as many calories as possible into each millileter of her food, and we have spent hours and hours and hours and hours trying to feed her when she absolutely does not want to eat. We are really hoping that this surgery does the trick and that our little girl, who is five pounds behind her twin, will finally start to catch up.

Here's our little munchkins practicing their tummy time:

Sorry to keep it so brief, but I've gotta get some shut eye while baby Zoe is sleeping. . .

May 2010

Pardon us for not posting sooner, but things are still a bit crazy around here. We still struggle to feed Zoe, and in fact, she was actually scheduled to go in for surgery first thing tomorrow. The doctors wanted to give her a nissen fundoplication and a g-tube (to help diminish her reflux and increase her appetite respectively), but we ended up getting another opinion over the weekend, and based on all of the information in front of us, have decided to wait a little longer. We're going to take a more therapeutic approach, using a nutritionist and a GI doctor to see if we can get somewhere that way and if that doesn't work, then we'll consider surgery. Needless to say, we are very glad that our little girl isn't going under the knife tomorrow--or getting reintibated--or going under general anesthesia--or being admitted to the hospital for five days . . . you get the picture.

Aside from all the eating drama, we are having so much fun with our little girls. Our flu season restrictions have been lifted and we're actually starting to get out and about with them. We are also so excited that we have had so many amazing visitors, including my old next-door neighbor, Rich's brother's, and the girls' nana, and we've got another grandma on the way out soon!

Here some pics of our little muchkins enjoying themselves.

Here's Zoe gearing up for one of our outings:

And Sadie, plotting her next move:

And both of them, preparing for their first Mother's Day walk:

And here we are, out on the town:

Happy Spring everyone!

All is Well

While it's definitely still a struggle to get Zoe to eat--and to care for two newborns in general--it's really starting to feel as if all our hard work is paying off! Zoe has lots of feeding issues--she has severe reflux that makes eating incredibly difficult and when she does manage to get food in, she often times has lots of trouble keeping it down. This coupled with mom going back to work has made for some very stressful days in the katz levi household. But, we're working it out. We don't get a lot of sleep, have little time to do anything else but we're thinking about it. In between playing with babies, pulling our hair out, doing laundry and trying to find ways to feed our little champs, we are thinking of all the things we should be doing like cleaning, writing thank you notes, washing clothes or G-d forbid actually put a load of laundry away.

Anyway, we're not complaining, we're just sayin' things are a little tough around here these days. That being said, the girls are getting bigger and stronger and we couldn't think of two better people to spend most every second of our days with.

Settling in Again

The girls are doing much better and we're settling in yet again. While there was some cause for alarm on Friday and Saturday and even Sunday, it turns out that Zoe had a little stomach virus that for a tiny peanut like her is just not that little. She's doing much better--she's not 100% yet--but she's definitely on the mend.

While we wouldn't wish hospital trips on our family again, the good news is that Zoe was admitted into the infant unit, and unlike in the NICU, babies in the infant unit get private rooms where moms and dads can spend the night. So nobody had to desert anyone this weekend. Mom stayed at the hospital with Zoe while dad stayed with Sadie. But tonight, thank goodness, we're all back under one roof again!

Well, before I even hit publish on this post, we found ourselves back in the hospital. Poor little Zoe had been given some barium in the hospital for a test and it did not agree with her at all. She's back home again and hopefully that's it for a while, but boy are we tired!!

Getting Settled In

We've had some crazy/wonderful/sleepless days and nights around here lately. On Zoe's first night we actually had to call 911 and were dangerously close to taking her back to the hospital that night and again the next morning, but she really pulled through. She was having some real trouble adjusting to the dry air and the elevation, but after making a few adjustments to her oxygen* she thankfully got much, much better!

Sadie's adjusting quite well too. She wasn't sure what to expect at first.

In the short time she was home, she had grown quite used to being an only child.

And to be honest, Zoe wasn't sure what to expect either. In fact, when she left the hospital for the first time, we think she was a little bit overwhelmed!

But we think they're getting used to the idea of having someone else around,

especially when it's time to do things like go the doctor and get shots, nobody likes doing that by themselves.

So, now that the first few days are behind us, mom and dad are getting into a routine and everyone has adjusted to their new living arrangements, we are all very happy. We're working hard on getting a routine down and spending lots of (sleepless) time snuggling, but we're also all spending a lot of time thinking about and missing Zoe.

Speaking of Zoe, our little pumpkin is doing really, really well. She's over five pounds, she's taking about 1/3 of her food by mouth and she's continuing to need less and less pressure with her oxygen! While that's all great news, in order to be able to come home she needs to take all of her food by mouth and she needs to function well with a bit less pressure coming through her oxygen tube. The doctors are shooting for her to be able to do this by the end of December, but the truth is, the only person who has any say about when this will happen is Zoe.

There's really nothing the doctors can do to hurry her along and the only thing any of us can do is wait. And that's not easy. Its not easy under any circumstances, but for us, the waiting is made more difficult by the fact that we both can't be there every day like we'd like to and when we are there, we usually have to say goodbye much sooner than we want to.

On the bright side, while the doctors can't really do anything to help Zoe right now, they do know that the one thing that will help her improve is growth. The bigger she is, the stronger her lungs will be and the more food she'll be able to take by mouth. So while Rich and I can't be at the hospital as much as we want, we can at least tell ourselves that our absence is allowing her to get some much needed, growth inspiring, rest!

Hurry and come home Zoe, everybody really misses you!

We are thrilled, over the moon, couldn't be happier and can't stop looking at our little Sadie. Both girls are in open cribs, both girls are nursing, and both girls are working on being able to come home.

Sadie's over five pounds these days, and Zoe's over four. The doctors think that Sadie could be home within the next two weeks and we're hoping Zoe's not too far behind her. To come home, the girls need to keep gaining weight, maintain their body temperature, keep their heart rate and oxygen levels from dropping for at least a week, and take all of their food by mouth. At this point, the only thing keeping Sadie from coming home is that she just doesn't have the energy to take all of her food by mouth yet, but she is really working on it, especially when we remind her just how much her parents cannot wait to bring her home! We're not positive, but we're almost certain that the thought of coming home sounds like a pretty good idea to Sadie too!

While we're quite certain Sadie is coming home first, we don't think it will be too long before her little sister comes following right behind her. As she's done throughout this journey, Zoe continues to surprise everyone at the hospital with all of her accomplishments. At this point though, Rich and I aren't that surprised by everything she does because we're perfectly aware of how strong and amazing she is! In fact, we often refer to her as our little tough girl, and we're pretty sure that if she were old enough to form sentences, she'd probably agree.

Seriously though, neither of us need the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday to remind us of just how lucky we are. Every second of every day that we are in the NICU, we are aware. And we are so grateful. Grateful that Zoe has made it to, and through, her surgery. Grateful that Sadie needs only to work on getting bigger. Grateful that we have such wonderful friends and family who have done so much to make this journey easier for us, donating or lending us every piece of baby gear we could imagine, making us dinners, and sending us helpful gifts that encourage us to be stronger. While these last few months have been a tremendous struggle for us, there are many days that we feel as if we have definitely hit the jackpot. We have each other, we have our two little baby girls, and we have amazing friends and family. What more could we ask for?

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Rich and Debbie

Update with Photos

The days are somehow growing longer and shorter at the same time. While we are still spending hours and hours each day at the hospital, (and if that isn't exhausting enough, Rich's hours and hours at the hospital don't start until he is done working for the day) it seems that the critical, life-threatening moments are coming fewer and farther between KNOCK ON WOOD a thousand times. The days that turned into all-nighters at the hospital for some type of emergency are more frequently being replaced by all-nighters at home, usually getting in sometime after eleven and then getting up every 2.5 hours to pump and call the nurses to check in on the babies.

In fear of jinxing ourselves, I should say that the bumps in the road have not entirely vanished. For example, little Sadie spit up last week and couldn't breathe while she was doing it, so that turned into a bit of a terrifying emergency that involved an oxygen bag and a nurse on high alert . . . and that's about as far as my mind can go on that one. And just a few days before that, Zoe's IV infiltrated, which means the vein in which the IV was in had broken down and all her meds when straight into her leg. We didn't find out until I got to her bedside and saw that her leg was almost three times its normal size and she was writhing in pain. That was horrible but it didn't end there. Before she had fully recovered, the nurses put in another IV, but it went bad a few hours later (those veins are SO tiny) and then the nurses spent over an hour and a half, while Zoe had to lay perfectly still, trying to get a central line in. Notwithstanding their best efforts, they were unsuccesful and little Zoe had to spend the rest of the night getting poked repeatedly while they moved her IVs around. But all was resolved when they finally got the central line in the next morning and Zoe's pain and discomfort vanished (for the time being).

As time goes on, it does seem like days like these are spacing themselves out and the babies are starting to act more and more just like little babies. Sadie is really working hard on nursing, while Zoe is still focusing her efforts on breathing, but they are both completely and entirely adorable. While we are utterly drained, running back and forth to the hospital every day and completely without sleep, every single second is 100% worth it. We will take this kind of exhaustion any day.

Anyway, enough about us, here are some recent pics of the little babes.

Sadie's over four pounds now so she's gets to move to an open crib soon. In preparation for the move, she gets to wear clothes while they lower the temperature in her isolette. Here's a shot of mom and dad getting her dressed for the very first time--thanks Auntie Christa for being there to commemorate the moment :).

And here she is in this adorable outfit that her nana bought for her:

When she's in her isolette, she keeps warm with this beautiful hat, handmade by her Cousin Judy (thanks Cousin Judy!!):

And here's Zoe in her matching hat, being snuggled up by her nana on her dad's side:

Now that Zoe is no longer hooked up to CPAP, she gets to come out of her isolette more often. She's still a bit sensitive to the world outside her isolette, but there is nothing she loves more than being held by people who love her--while she has her binky. This little girls could not be any happier:

And finally, here's a shot of little Sadie, just because we had to:

A Few Steps Forward and Hopefully No Steps Back

I know it's been too long since we last posted. We've had some very long days in the NICU and have essentially been too exhausted to do much else but sleep when we're home. In a nut shell, all is well. Zoe is off of CPAP (the really uncomfortable oxygen machine) and she's now on a high flow nasal canula; but, she has developed a minor staph infection. Apparently this type of infection is quite treatable and not at all uncommon for hospitalized premature babies, nonetheless, a few of the nurses did a great job of unnecessarily scaring the bejeezus out of us while we were waiting for the cultures to come back. Thus, we had quite a few could-have-been-avoided sleepless nights over the weekend. Thankfully, though, all is well and Zoe is doing much better. She is, however, working pretty hard on this breathing thing (like sometimes she completely forgets that she needs to) so we're just going to have to be patient and keep rooting her on while she works it all out. All in all though, she's doing great. She's getting fed breast milk, she's loving her long-awaited skin to skin time with her parents and she even enjoyed a visit with one of her mommy and daddy's favorite friends today--aka Keri C! Here's a shot of the little one sans ventilator or cpap but with binky!

And here's one of her finally getting some skin to skin time with her mommy:

Sadie is also doing well. She pretty much spends her days working hard on nursing, eating, growing and, of course . . . sleeping:

Major Milestones

Today was a pretty big day at the hospital. Here are just a few of the highlights:

Sadie had her third, and very successful day learning how to nurse, she's officially over three pounds, and she no longer needs any oxygen support. She is also all the more happier knowing that she spent the weekend getting to know Gigi, her grandmother on her mother's side!

As for Zoe, she hit some major milestones as well. For starters, she came off the ventilator today (she did, however, get connected to CPAP, a less invasive but still pretty intense oxygen machine), she had her first mom and dad directed bath, got to be cuddled by both of her parents, got to show off her her face without any tubes or tape for the first time ever (even though it quickly got covered up again when she was connected to her new machine), and she got to breathe out loud and let her parents hear her cry--both for the very first time.

While giving birth to two baby girls is a pretty big deal, getting to hold BOTH of our daughters on the same day--after everything they've been through--is almost bigger. Today may have been one of the longest days at the hospital, but it was, honestly speaking, one of the best. Of course, we know that we still need to maintain our cautious optimism because they both have a long way to go but at least for a very short time today, it felt so good to see both of our little girls looking and acting just like babies.

somebody got her belly all closed up today!

Zoe had her third surgery today, and as you can (maybe) tell from the photo, the only thing on her belly right now are two big band-aids! Gone is the orange colored tape, the mountain of gauze and the tube they had put in there. Now she just has a cute as pie little belly that her mom and dad can't wait to snuggle with!

Her surgeon said she did an amazing job, yet again. Now the docs will keep a close eye on her for the next 48 hours and, provided that all goes well, start looking at feeding her and weaning her off of the ventilator. These next two steps are really important because even though the ventilator probably saved her life and the intraveneous "food" she is getting has helped her grow, both tools can have damaging effects if used for too long. The ventilator, for example, can cause something called chronic lung disease, and the TPN, her liquid food, can cause liver damage. Anyway, we're not focused on that right now; rather, we're just focused on how amazingly strong she is and how impressive it is that she has powered through three surgeries like a champ and she's not even three weeks old!

And as for her sister--turns out the scale the nurses were weighing her on was broken so the little one is not so little. While they thought her weight was something to be concerned about, everyone is rejoicing in the fact that she is significantly heavier than we thought she was!

All is Well Right Now

All is well with the babes right now. Zoe is completely off her nitric oxide and yesterday's echocardiogram came back showing minimal to no signs of pulmonary hypertension. This is a great news b/c nitric oxide is one of the main PHT meds--and yesterday's results mean she really is doing great--all on her own. Her lung x-rays look fantastic too, in fact, her right lung, which was only 1/3 of it's proper size at birth, has filled almost all of the right side of her chest cavity! Like one of the docs told us the other day, she really is a little miracle baby.

We know she's not out of the woods yet. The next big steps involve closing her abdomen and getting her off the ventilator. Mom is much more anxious about this than dad, who is perfectly, and probably more appropriately, happy to be patient. It would be great if the docs could extibate her (take her off the ventilator) before the grandmothers get here (very soon!) but we'll take whatever we can get. If not before their first visit, then certainly for their second.

In the meantime, Zoe seems very happy. She especially loves it when her mom and dad come into the room and sit by her bedside. Even though she's on some pain meds and pretty well sedated, she always does her absolute best to open up her eyes and look at us whenever she hears our voices. Yesterday I think she was trying to say thank you to her daddy for always coming to see her, reading her bedtime stories, and kissing her goodnight every single night--no matter how late it is, how may hours he has already been at the hospital, or whether this requires him to take one more late night trip to the hospital in order to be at his daughters' bedsides.

Sadie is doing really well too, in fact, she gained two whole ounces yesterday! We are so happy about that. While I've mentioned that we get to do skin to skin with her every day, a lot of people have asked me what that means. The technical name for skin to skin is "kangaroo care," :) and it actually involves laying the baby right up against mom or dad's skin. Not only does skin to skin keep the babies really warm, but it helps them developmentally as well. It's not just good for babies though. As you can see from the photo, parents love it just as much . . . if not more, than their children.

Zoe's First Follow Up Procedure

The surgery team is changing Zoe's dressing today. As we mentioned before, they left her abdomen "open" after her surgery because putting everything in its proper place right away could cause too much pressure to build up in her belly. The wound is nice and covered and mom and dad can't see it when we're visiting with her, but we can definitely see the dressing, which is referred to as a silo. The silo involves a plastic covering a bunch of adhesive and gauze and some tubing. While it may sound quite routine to change a dressing, at Zoe's age it's a pretty big deal. Surgery turns her room into a mini OR and the anaesthesia team is there to help monitor her pain. Basically, any time they go in and start moving things around, there is a risk that they can jeapordize her stability. Also, even though they give Zoe lots of medications so she is well sedated, she still wiggles around a lot and senses people are in her room--at least that's what she was doing right before they kicked us out.

So, since we've been kicked out. . . we are just sitting in the hallway waiting for a report from the surgeon that all went well. Hopefully he will be out momentarily with good news.

+++++++++++++++++++++

Yay!! The surgeon says everything went well. They changed the dressing and closed a portion of the wound. They would have closed the whole thing today, but they felt like it would be better to do it in two steps. So, they'll come back next week and do the whole thing again. While we don't like our little girl to have to have so many surgical procedures, we'd rather the doctors be more gentle than aggressive, so we're perfectly fine with their plan.

We are so proud of our little girl and we will never get tired of hearing the doctors tell us how amazing she is. We'd love to post a picture of her but we decided to wait until her dressing is gone--we just think she may want a little privacy. :)

As for her sister is concerned--we're happy to report that she gained some weight tonight. She lost a bunch of weight after she was born, which is normal for babies, but the docs weren't so happy that she hadn't started gaining any. After a few adjustments to her food and the addition of some protein powder, we're thrilled to report that she's finally trending upwards, i.e., getting a little fatter. We're also thrilled to report that we're now regularly getting skin to skin time with her, and mom, dad, and Sadie couldn't be happier!

Recovering from Surgery

Today was much better than yesterday--for all of us. For mom and dad, it's as if the universe knew that we had just about reached our tipping point (physically and emotionally) and it decided to give us a little break. For starters, we were greeted this morning by an amazing new nurse for Zoe. The nurses sit by the patient's bed side all day long and they are an incredibly important part of the process. Having a good nurse (or a not so good nurse) can really effect the way the family functions. So, it was a huge emotional relief for us when we met one of Zoe's new nurses because she completely put us at ease. After talking with her for about an hour, we really felt like Zoe was in a good spot and we could actually feel confident about going home to rest for a little while.

That being said, we are a bit apprehensive to report too much of Zoe's progress because we know we are not out of the woods yet. So . . . we will leave it at this: for the time being, she is doing well and hanging tough. Her numbers (saturation, blood pressure, and PO2) look good. She is being weaned off several of her meds and she is staying stable. The docs discovered one other thing they may need to fix with surgery in a week or two, but for the time being it's not a big deal and not causing her any problems. She really is a fighter and we are more and more amazed by her every day, as are the doctors and the nurses. That being said, we are all staying focused on her continuing to overcome all of her hurdles and don't want to get too excited, at least not yet.

We also got a little relief when we went to see Sadie. Her neonatologist was back to work today, after having the weekend off, and he always makes us feel at ease. We discussed Sadie's spitting up and weight issues, and he was very relaxed about it. He said that he was going to add some more supplements to her feeding and he expects her to start gaining weight in no time. While we were talking at Sadie's bedside, we got a little bit more relief when her nurse gave us a suggestion. She overheard us talking to Sadie, telling her that we couldn't wait to kiss her little face and then the nurse offered to lift the head off of Sadie's isolette and let us get in there and smother her with kisses. We haven't really been able to do that yet, so you can imagine how much we enjoyed every single second of it.

Finally, we have noticed that win or lose, our little girls have decided that they are definitely Ravens fans. We're not sure if it's the picture of Ray Lewis we talked about putting up in their isolettes or just a happy coincidence, but somehow Sadie managed to convince the nurses to dress her up in the purple and black today. Apparently she said she won't let any last minute losses to division opponents deter her from her steadfast commitment.

Everything is okay today. Zoe had one little episode this morning where her heart rate got really high (SVT), but the nurses corrected it and they are just going to watch her closely to make sure it doesn't happen again. The nurses were also a bit worried about Sadie and her spitting up, but they adjusted the amount of food she is getting and she hasn't spit up again, so hopefully it was a food volume issue and not something more serious.

On the parent front, Rich and I are just exhausted. While the surgery is over, we are clearly aware of the fact that we have a long road ahead of us and for some reason, that reality is a little tough to take today. But, we are hanging in there and I know we will feel better after a little rest and regrouping.

Surgery Update II

Everything is great! Zoe made it through her surgery successfully and we are SO proud of her. But before we get too excited, we need to get her through the next 48 hours w/o incident. The doc says that's the best indication of how she will do--so we are reserving a complete celebration until a little bit later.

In the meantime, though, we are celebrating today's success! Zoe was very tough during her surgery. While the doctors pulled her liver and small bowels out of her chest, she managed to maintain the same [healthy] heart rate and blood pressure throughout the entire procedure. The doctor said that the hole in her diaphragm was bigger than expected--essentially the entire right side was missing, so he had to use a goretex patch as opposed to her own muscle fiber, but we are perfectly fine with that. It's no surprise to us that she needed a patch, we just didn't expect that the hole was going to be that big. The goretex patches work great, the only drawback is that they don't grow with the child, so in a year or two she may need the patch replaced. There is also a risk that she can reherniate and we won't necessarily know it. Reherniation can be pretty dangerous, but the doc left some slack in her patch so there's room to grow and the docs will monitor her closely for the first few years of her life.

We are going to continue to watch her through the night. She was given some medicine that paralyzes her skeletal muscles to keep her still during the surgery and we'd like to see that wear off. They also leave her stomach open (covered, but open) because her abdomen needs time to make room for the liver and the bowels. If they don't keep the abdomen open, a lot of pressure builds up in her abdomen and lungs and that's the last thing we want. Oh, and it turns out that her right lung, which was compressed by the liver, is about 1/3 in tact and that made the docs quite happy. Over the next few months her lungs will fill out the space in her chest and, in fact, they will continue to grow until she is about six or seven.

In the mean time, her sister had some big firsts as well today as well. Sadie got a big time IV removed yesterday so mom and dad got to hold her for the very first time this morning. It was so amazing--for all of us. She also had her first spit up. We all said that was because she was so worried about her sister's surgery. But, everything has calmed down in her tummy and both girls are resting quietly right now. So are mom and dad.

Thank you so much for everyone's thoughts, prayers, and well wishes. We know it made such a big difference today!

Surgery Update

Surgery didn't get started until around 2:30 today. We thought we'd go to the hospital for a few hours, head home at lunch time and come back down later to say goodnight. At least that was the plan we had thought we were going to stick to, but everything changed once we spoke with Zoe's doctors. Turns out that some time between last night and this morning, they had changed their mind about Zoe's surgery. Instead of waiting until next week, they decided they wanted to do the surgery sooner--as in tomorrow sooner. The docs wanted to run one more echocardiogram to check Zoe's pulmonary hypertension, but if all went well they intended to transport Zoe to the children's hospital today and operate in the morning.

While the children's hospital is connected to the one in which I gave birth, transporting babies in Zoe's condition is no small thing. She needs to stay on the ventilator, keep all her meds, oxygen, and nitrous oxide in tact, and stay stable. It is not abnormal for babies to have some kind of setback after transport. In fact, we know just how difficult transport can be because when Zoe was born, they decided not to transport her as they had intended to do because she was so fragile they thought she might "crash" along on the way.

So . . . we waited anxiously for her echocardiogram to come back. If her pulmonary hypertension had improved it was all a go. We were nervous for so many reasons, not the least of which was that doing the surgery over the weekend meant using a different pediatric surgeon, one we had not ever met. We tried very hard to track this new doctor down throughout the day, but we didn't have any luck. Ultimately, we decided that we just needed to suck it up, trust everyone's word when they told us that he is excellent, and realize that we weren't going to meet him until we got closer to the surgery.

At about noon we got the results of the echo back--all was good and transport was a definite. They told us to be ready at 3. What they didn't tell us is that Lifeflight (the team that responds to major emergencies) was going to do the transport. They also didn't tell us how gigantic the transport machine is. So you can imagine our surprise (and my tears) when this machine rolled into Zoe's room:

They had to unhook Zoe from all her connections and rehook her on this new isolette,

but the team was completely on top of it and stayed very focused on the task at hand. After connecting her to her new ventilator, they wheeled her through the hospital. I cannot tell you how much people stare when they see this machine being wheeled through the hallway:

After about a five minute transport, they finally got Zoe to her new home in the children's hospital. Then they reversed the whole process--unhooking her from everything so they can reattach her to her new machines:

While mom and dad settled in and relaxed, and dad made sure all the nurses were on task

Zoe settled into her new home:

The docs said that her numbers appeared to stay stable and she did a great job. Mom and dad were VERY relieved that she handled everything so well. Meanwhile, when we told Sadie that Zoe was going to have a big day and get transported over to the hospital right next door, she said she was really going to miss her, but wished her sister well and told her she couldn't wait to see her soon!

As far as the new pediatric surgeon goes, we finally got to meet him after Zoe had settled in. He seems very smart and capable and we feel completely comfortable about him. Of course, it doesn't hurt that he went to Hopkins for undergrad and med school and he's been to the Charles Village Pub, The Green Turtle and Eddies Supermarket, but we can't get past the fact that he grew up in Pittsburgh and he's, unfortunately, a Steelers fan.

All kidding aside, we feel very confident with Zoe's life in his hands tomorrow. While the surgery itself is not all that complicated, it involves moving the liver from the chest down to the abdomen and anytime anyone touches a premature baby's liver, there as a risk of bleeding that could potentially become catastrophic. So, please hold Zoe in your thoughts and prayers tomorrow morning, and hope that her surgery is smooth sailing.

It's late and we are very tired, so we are going to try and rest up for the big day tomorrow. THANK YOU so much to our friends Katherine, Roger, Karena and Adam who dropped dinners off at our house tonight. They could not have come at a better time! And thank you Meg for always coming by the hospital and visiting with us. It always adds a little boost to our day. Before we go though, we want to give a shout out to our friend Emily who was admitted to the hospital today for complications from her heart transplant. Em--we will come see you this weekend and we absolutely know that things will improve for you very, very soon!

First Day Out of the Hospital

Today was pretty exhausting, not because anything went wrong (at least not so far) but because we are realizing how incredibly difficult it is to not live right down the hall from our little babies. We spent most of the day at their bedsides and while we wish we could be there all day and night, we know that's not exactly practical. So, we are settling for small little blessings that happen throughout the day.

While we were switching back and forth from one isolette to another today, I told Rich that I just wish I could be there every time they wake up. I want our faces to be the first faces they see when they open their eyes. With the amount of sedation that Zoe is on, she sleeps for most of the day so she doesn't open her a eyes a whole lot . . . so as long as I can sit by her side and read to her, and let her know we're there, I'm okay. But Sadie does wake up every day and she opens her tiny little eyes and looks around. We don't get to see her do it that often because she spends most of each day sleeping and growing. But today, as if she had heard me, or knew what I needed, she did it. Just as we had returned from getting a bite to eat, we walked up to her isolette. And there right in front of us, she opened her tiny little eyes and we were the very first things she got to see.

While Zoe doesn't open her eyes a whole lot each day, she does sleep rather peacefully, even on the ventilator. And even though it's hard to see her face with the ventilator covering it, trust us when we say that she is cuter and cuter every single day. Especially because a lot of her swelling has gone down, she's been weaned off two of her medications, and she is functioning so well while only getting 40-50% oxygen from one of her machines. Here's our little pumpkin fast asleep and adorable:

Discharge Day for Debbie

I was discharged from the hospital this morning. While it feels great to be home, it was definitely more comforting to be right down the hall from the girls. That being said, they looked great this morning and the docs are even talking about scheduling Zoe's some time early next week. Meanwhile, I am finally getting a little bit of sleep, figuring out how to clean and recover at the same time, which means scheduling a cleaning person for tomorrow :), and figuring out how many times a day we can get down to the hospital see the little ones.

Photo Opps

Here are some pics from our last few visits:

Here's dad helping the nurses with Sadie's "cares." That's what they call it when they change her diaper, check her temperature and blood pressure, and change her bedding etc. . . Dad is a great helper and he's already changed his first (tiny) diaper:

And here's dad diligently checking his daughters' monitors. We're learning how to read lots of complicated numbers and it's paying off. Today we learned that Zoe's oxygen has been reduced from 100% to 60%--and that's great news. In other words, a few days ago, she needed the oxygen machine to give her it's maximum output to keep her blood oxygenated, today she only needs 60% of the machine's oxygen and her blood is still oxygenating beautifully.

This is mom telling Zoe that if this is her ploy to try and get out of Hebrew school, it's just not going to work; she's still going to have to go (just like her mom and dad had to). :)

And finally, this is mama telling Zoe we will be back to see her in a few hours and to keep on hanging in there:

Thanks for everyone thoughts, wishes, and prayers, we really think it helps.

love,

deb and rich

Plugging Along

Things are starting to feel almost normal around here today. Sadie is plugging along, still doing well. She came off the c-pap today and responded well. She's just hanging out growing and getting a little bit older. She even makes cute little cooing sounds and grabs my finger when I reach in to touch her hand. The hardest part about her status is not being able to pick her up and snuggle with her. She's so close to being able to be held that it just breaks our hearts to not be able to do so every time we see her. But . . . if that's our biggest hurdle with her right now, we'll take it!

Zoe, we're happy to report, is also doing really well (considering). About a day and a half ago, she was on the max doses and the max number of medications that the doctors could give her and her oxygen saturation levels were not ideal. But, over the last day and a half, her little body settled in some, her saturations levels look good, and the docs are dialing back some of her medications. The problem with her condition is that she's only got one really good lung right now and that lung has a hard time doing all the work. In response to the lung's stress, the vessels leading into her lungs constrict and blood tries to go back through the body without being oxygenated. The medications she's on work, among other things, to relax her veins, oxygenate her blood, and stabilize her blood pressure and as of today, the docs have been able to decrease her meds while maintaining her stability. So, the docs are VERY pleased with Zoe right now. Of course, we know that things could change at any second, mostly just because she's so little, but in the mean time, we have all decided that it's okay to be cautiously optimistic.

We were even able to have some visitors today and it was very nice to catch up with the outside world. I hope to get some more pics of the little girls when we head back down after dinner. Hopefully I'll have some by tomorrow morning.

Day 2 update

The good news is that Sadie is doing really well. The docs say she's a "champ." She's back on the c-pap machine, which is just an oxygen machine w/ some bubbly water, because she had one little case of apnea yesterday (meaning, she forgets, for just a second, to breathe on her own). Apnea is completely expected for a baby her age and not harmful, as long as the nurses catch it right away, which they did. She is a cute and tiny little bugger, and aside from the one instance of apnea, she really is doing wonderfully. The docs expect to have her off the c-pap today and told us that we can expect to hold her tomorrow. Here are a few shots of mom and dad seeing her for the first time:

And here's one of her first solo shots:

It really used to freak us out to see pictures of babies all hooked up to tubes, but we're realizing that it's different when their your own. It's just not as scary, and the truth is, when it comes to Sadie, there really aren't that many tubes. Most of the things she's connected to are monitors, and the only other thing she's got going on is a little oxygen, so she really is in good shape. Anyway, we think she's pretty adorable.

As far as her sister Zoe is concerned, things are not going quite as well. The doctors are doing everything they can for her but what she really needs is to be on an ECMO machine. That's a heart lung bypass machine that most babies w/ CDH need. Being on ECMO helps the body stabilize so that the doctors can do the surgery they need to do to repair her hernia. Unfortunately, Zoe does not weigh enough for ECMO and she's not stable enough for surgery w/o ECMO. So, the doctors are giving her all the medications they can to stabilize her oxygen and CO2 levels and help her heart function. It's a lot to take for a tiny little baby to take and we have already had to discuss how much intervention we would or would not like them to do should her condition worsen. As people have told us, dealing with CDH can feel much like a roller coaster, and we're finding that to be entirely true. For example, yesterday Zoe was doing great, her oxygen was awesome and she was only on two meds. However, some time last night, her oxygen levels had tanked and they had to put her on six meds. And when we went down to see her today, she had stabilized again, but she's still on lots of meds. Adding to the roller coaster, the nurses came down to tell us to be prepared to say goodbye and then an hour later the doctor told us that we absolutely weren't there yet. So . . . based on the ups and downs, Rich and I are laying low, we're not really taking any visitors at this moment, not because we wouldn't love to see people, but more b/c when we are back in the room we kind of need to decompress and relax. We hope everyone understands.

Oh, and before I forget, here's a picture of little Zoe, she's got quite a few more hook ups than her sister. We know it's shocking to see all of her wires and tubes, but there's not really not that much we can do about that right now:

x's and o's,
debbie and rich

They're Here!

After 27 & 1/2 hours of contracting, the doctors finally determined that I might be in labor. So . . . at about 1:30 am this morning, they prepped me for a c-section and at 2:58 a.m., both little girls, Sadie and Zoe, were born!

We didn't get to see them at all b/c they got passed through to the nicu right away and in fact, we haven't seen Zoe at all yet, but, both babies are doing great. Sadie weighs 2 pounds and 4 oz. an Zoe weighs 2.14, Sadie is on room air w/ something called a nasal canula and Zoe is taking in a perfect amount of oxygen.

Zoe, as most everyone knows, has a congenital diaphragmatic hernia and will need to be operated on as soon as she is stable enough. But, with her condition, sometimes this initial stabilization period can be most difficult so we are thrilled to hear that she is doing so wonderfully! The babies were hooked up to the monitors for about an hour this morning. Their heart rates are great and it appears that I am not having any significant contractions. After the monitoring appointment, the docs wanted to check the amount of fluid surrounding Sadie. Even though her water sac broke, babies continue to replenish their fluid throughout the pregnancy, and the docs wanted to see where Sadie was at today. Well, even though she replenishes her fluid, because there is no way to repair the tear, the fluid waxes and wanes. So, not surprisingly, when they measured her fluid, it was zero. That means the little bugger is hanging out without any amniotic fluid around her. Rich and I, however, are completely amazed to have learned that that's okay. Babies can function like this for the duration of the pregnancy. Apparently, fluid is very important through the 24th week because it helps lay the foundation for lung development, but after that, it's not actually essential.

If it surprises anyone that we've learned so much, we give all of the credit to our amazing doctors. They could not be any nicer or more helpful to us. In addition to the obligatory morning rounds, they come and visit us throughout the day--sometimes to check in on us and grab one of the many sweets in our room--and sometimes just to shoot the shi$. We know which docs are running marathons, what their goal time is, how many kids they have, where they got their education, etc. Even the docs who aren't caring for us at this very moment (but who will be caring for Sadie and Zoe) come and visit us every day just to check in. Anyway, through all the visits, we've had all of our questions answered and learned so much about the babies' predicament. If the amount of information we've taken in could possibly correlate to the amount of time the babies will stay where they're supposed to, we'd be sitting pretty. Unfortunately, it's not that easy.

+++++

As an aside--if any of you have long stays coming up at this particular hospital--and I hope none of you do, it might be helpful for you to know how they schedule the food around here. When I first got here, they gave me a menu that detailed all of the food for the week--from the entree down to the dessert, it was very detailed and the food was actually pretty good. At the start of the second week, I asked our "nutrition representative" for a new menu, and he was happy to oblige. He left the room for a moment and came back with a crisp piece of paper in his grip. As he handed it to me, he said, "I've got no problem giving you a new menu, but you do realize that it lists exactly the same food as last week's menu." In other words, while I found last Tuesday's spinach fettuccine and chicken almost pretty good, I didn't realize that I would have that very same meal every single Tuesday that I'm here. ;). No worries though, things could be worse. Here's to loads more spinach fettuccine with chicken.

Anyway, happy October 1st to everyone. Rich and I could not be any more thrilled to have made it past September.

29 Weeks

The twins are 29 weeks today, and in celebration of that milestone, we brought the doctors and the nurses donuts from the best donut shop in town (which wasn't hard to do because the shop delivers directly to the hospital--but it's the thought that counts right?).

We had a relatively uneventful day yesterday. Besides the bleeding, an hour of some pretty intense contractions, and an annoying exam all seemed to calm down just in time for dinner. The contractions were most likely caused by the bleeding, but we're happy to report it has slowed down today. Thanks, we're sure to everyone's positive thoughts. That's great news for us and we are thrilled.

Today we were visited by the head of the maternal fetal medicine department. The doctor spent almost an entire hour with us answering all of our questions and discussing our case. Apparently, when a person ruptures her membranes, the placenta can pull away and cause a person to bleed. At the moment it's under control, but the doctors are watching my bleeding very closely. If it progresses it can turn into a complete placental abruption, which nobody really wants. It is, to put it mildly, a bit scary when the bleeding occurs. So, if any of you have time on your side or extra prayers to lend, please pray that my bleeding subsides.

Thanks,

Debbie and Rich

Infection?

We woke up on Saturday morning, so grateful to be back in our room, not in a threatened emergency, and able to have breakfast. At about 8:00 a.m., the nurse came in. She wanted to run another non-stress test (NST). This is the same test the docs had been running for 9 hours the day before so we were definitely not happy to hear that news, but of course, we knew that it was best for the babies. So they did the test, everything looked great, and the nurse sent the results over to the doctor.

In the mean time, my friend had come to visit and Rich felt comfortable enough to head home, check in on the kitties and refresh. Not 10 minutes after he'd left and my friend and I were chatting did the nurse come back and say that the doctor wanted to bring us BACK over to labor and delivery right away. Apparently, there was some uterine activity during the NST that worried the doc. In particular, she was worried that I was cooking up an infection. This is very scary news because when a person's membranes have ruptured, the risk for infection is high and once an infection sets in the docs have no choice but to deliver the babies right away.

So, my friend and I gathered up my things, I loaded up into a wheelchair and they took me over to labor and delivery. As soon as I got there, the nurse told me they were going to run three different tests, all of which I knew were quite painful, and, based on what we had previously been told, were last resort tests. In other words, while we knew there were certain tests the docs could do to assess how my body was doing, the risk of infection that accompanied those tests was high enough that they wouldn't do them unless they absolutely had to. So, when I heard they wanted to run three of them, my heart sank while my blood pressure and pulse sky rocketed. At that point, I figured I better call Rich, who was half way up the canyon toward our house, but who promptly turned around and sped back to the hospital.

To make a long story short--I sat in labor and delivery--fasting and stressing for about 24 hours. But . . . all the tests came back negative, the babies seem to being doing great, and after a long sleepless night we were finally able to head "back home" to our room again.

On Sunday we spent most of the day sleeping and catching up, counting our blessings that we didn't have to deliver the babies. We essentially did the same thing today with a little less stress. Our morning tests went beautifully and the doctor was very pleased. I also got an A+ on my CBC this morning. My white blood cell count is low and everything looks great. No infection and no baby distress--just another routine day at the hospital.

DCels

On Friday we went for our routine diagnostic test and during the procedure, the nurse noticed that one of the twins, Sadie, was having decelerations or "d-cels." This happens when a baby accidentally compresses her umbilical cord and her heart rate plummets. D-cels are actually normal and generally don't last very long because the baby moves and stops the compression on her own, but when a baby has very little amniotic fluid surrounding her (like Sadie), the doctors worry that the d-cels will be more devastating. So, the nurses in diagnostics consulted with the perinatologist, who decided that we needed to be taken to labor and delivery right away. They wanted to watch the babies closely, i.e.., hook me up to tons of monitors for several hours to determine whether they needed to intervene. The babies are not even twenty nine weeks, and intervening means going in and pulling the twins out, so needless to say, Rich and I sat with bated breath for the next nine hours while they monitored us. If it's not hard enough to watch your baby's heart rate go down while there's nothing you can do about it, we had to wrestle with the thought of a very early emergency c-section accompanied with a high chance of a dismal outcome. This wasn't exactly enjoyable. But . . . all the stress disappeared at about 6:00 p.m. when the docs determined that the dcels had subsided, there was no reason for intervention, and we could go back to our room. This was great news for two reasons--not only did it mean that the babies could spend at least one more day growing inside of me, but it also meant that I could eat and drink! When they have you in labor and delivery, they anticipate a pending c-section, thus, the docs want you to have an empty stomach to prevent you from aspirating. So, on top of the fact that we were incredibly worried about what was going on, it didn't help that I couldn't have as much as a sip of water while I was trying not to panic. It did, however, help to have some friends stop by in the middle of our labor and delivery visit. They sat with us and helped us pass the time and they encouraged Rich to go get some much needed lunch. That visit, like all ones we've had, was much appreciated!

p.s. here's me, so happy to be back in "my own" bed

Bed Rest but No Rest

We've been here for a little over a week now but it feels more like a year. Every day is a new milestone and, sometimes, a new emergency. When we found out, on September 19, that we were going to stay in the hospital for (potentially) several weeks on bed rest, we both thought that I would go crazy with boredom. Turns out, however, that bedrest for premature ruptured membranes is anything but boring. On a "regular" day I am hooked up to monitors every four hours, starting at midnight; we meet with the rounding med student at about 5:30 a.m., the rounding doctor at around 6:00 a.m., and the attending on duty at some point in the afternoon. In between those visits, we have an approximately one hour appointment in the diagnostic center every morning and we are frequently visited by multiple other doctors, i.e., the neonatologist who will care for the babies when they're born, doctors from the practice who follow us outside of the hospital, and doctors who happen to know us personally. All in all, bedrest is actually BUSY, and I barely have any time to actually rest. So . . . if any of you have called, emailed or sent flowers or treats and you have not heard from us, please know that we appreciate your thoughts and gestures so much, but we just have not had time to respond to everyone, especially not after the last few days . . .
